Curatorial Statement:
"Queer" emerged from a 16th cent. germanic root word "Quer" meaning
slanted or oblique. Over time it began to describe the creeping
feelings that unevenness, uncanniness and oddity create. Queer entered
the modern english language describing a very unique type of
strangeness. Long before being used as a synonym for "faggot", queer
described feelings of nausea, disgust, last minute failures and fuck
ups. It's a word that describes that which is "off" or "not quite
right."
There's something intrinsically "different" in that which is "queer."
Something that, at its core, asks the question: What is normal? It's a
fundamental question. A question whose dissection drives our ongoing
exploration of society. It's this question that motivates us to
examine the boundaries of identity and push at its edges. There is an
agitative aspect to anything described as queer. And its not because
of what queer things do, it's because of what they are. They are "out
of line", they are "out of order", but most of all they're just not
"straight."
